Full Days, Full Hearts - Sandra Castro

Upon arrival to the NDLON conference I had a lot of things going through my mind. I recalled the last conference that took place two years ago in Phoenix Arizona. In my mind I was going through a timeline of events and scenarios that our organization and NDLON has encounters. Four years ago Arpaio was our only problem. He was the one who was attacking the day laborers by using 287g. Now we have been hit with SB1070, and the nation is feeling the copycat effects of the mother of anti-migratory bills. I knew this conference would be crucial to not only the people of Arizona, but also every single person fighting for migrant rights and workers rights across the nation. When I walked into the conference area this morning. I was overcome with a gleeful feeling of power and hope.

It is always great to see a room full of people that believe that together we can make a difference, and we can beat back the right wing attack. This morning we had several hours full of key note speakers and other people who would give us information and reports as to the attacks and victories across the nation. We would also later begin the training session where everyone had the opportunity to get a two hour training on several topics and issues. The best trainers and presenters have been brought out across the nation to help give us the tools necessary to make positive changes in our community.

The day would finally culminate with the screening of the film “A Better Life.” The room was full of the conference delegates who were full of emotions and tears after watching this touching movie. Many people in the room took sensitivity to the movie because they were able to connect it to a reality that they live everyday.

This day was jammed pack and full of events however it was a great start to a four-day conference. Everyone was motivated and inspired to continue to grow, learn, and fight for a better tomorrow within the next four days. These next four days will encompass transformative changes within all of us, no matter how long we have been organizing. I am excited to see what the next couple of days have in store.
