Day laborer advocates offering training, safety tips  - NY Daily News

Advocates for immigrant day laborers are visiting city street corners to give safety gear and tips to workers lined up for jobs. The advocates say they are trying to avoid the widespread unsafe conditions and wage theft that accompanied rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina and the 9/11 attacks. Leaders from organizations in umbrella group National Day Labor Organizing Network got a full training themselves at a Baruch College event Tuesday and announced plans to distribute 2,500 donated kits with goggles, gloves and safety vests. The nearly two dozen leaders from New York and New Jersey who attended said they planned to pass on what they learned to more than 5,000 day laborers. “We are training people right on the street,” said Workers Justice Project director Ligia Guallpa, who assists laborers in Bensonhurst, Coney Island and the Rockaways. “Part of our work is to educate, but also to speak up for these workers,” she said. “We’re worried about mold.
