Trust Act Signed In California As Rallies For Immigration Reform In 80 Cities Celebrate ‘National Day For Dignity And Respect’

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a series of bills collectively called the Trust Act into law on Saturday that expands upon the California Dream Act, which gave undocumented individuals more rights under California law than they had previously. The Transparency and Responsibility Using State Tools Act, colloquially known as the Trust Act, prevents law enforcement officials from holding an individual if requested to do so by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, also known as ICE. The bill, AB 4, was introduced by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco. It states that an individual arrested for misdemeanor charges, and eligible to be released, cannot be held for an extra period of time by law enforcement officials solely for deportation. "While Washington waffles on immigration, California’s forging ahead," Brown said in a statement that announced the signing of the Trust Act.
